Today, on the DailyCast: e-cigarettes and the future of smoking.
Happy Monday! Thank you for listening to the DailyCast from ESLnewscast.com. I’m Cory Renzella, and I hope your day is going well.
Back in the early 1900s, when smoking cigarettes became really popular, people didn’t know how harmful smoking was. Now, we do know. Smoking cigarettes is a very unhealthy addiction, or uncontrollable behavior. It damages the lungs, which are the organs used for breathing; can cause cancer, which is a disease; and stains, or discolors, teeth.
In many countries, smoking has been banned, or made illegal, in public places. Governments tax cigarettes, which makes them expensive to buy, and cigarette companies are heavily regulated, which means that they have to follow a lot of rules.
So today, smoking is viewed, or thought of, in a more negative way than it used to be. And people will probably continue to view it negatively in the future.
Because of that, there are new products that you might have already seen people using. These products aren’t made of paper; don’t need to be lit, or burned; and don’t emit, or release, any smoke. They’re called e-cigarettes.
Have you ever heard of or seen them?
Already, e-cigarettes are being “smoked” by millions of people, and the market for them is expected to reach, or increase to, US$2 billion this year.
Here’s how an e-cigarette works: it’s a small battery-powered device that is made of plastic or metal. Inside, there’s liquid nicotine, and nicotine is the liquid inside tobacco that people can become addicted to. The e-cigarette’s battery heats the liquid nicotine, and smokers then inhale, or breathe in, a vapor. Vapor is a liquid that has turned into a gas, and the vapor looks like smoke.
There’s a wide variety, or large selection, of e-cigarette flavors. They include the traditional, or usual, tobacco flavor, fruit flavors, and even pina colada flavor (a pina colada is an alcoholic drink). And e-cigarettes don’t contain tobacco or a lot of the harmful chemicals that are found in traditional cigarettes; although as I said, they do contain nicotine, and they are expensive.
Right now, regulations for e-cigarettes aren’t the same as those for traditional ones. E-cigarettes are easier to market, or sell, and they can be advertised on television. The companies that sell e-cigarettes are hoping that governments won’t create new rules for them, so they’re trying to promote, or make public, a surprising benefit of e-cigarettes: they could actually help people stop smoking.
The argument for this is that people will switch, or change, from harmful traditional cigarettes to healthier e-cigarettes. We still don’t know how addictive or harmful e-cigarettes are, but they are definitely not as harmful as traditional cigarettes. So, if everyone who currently smokes traditional cigarettes were to switch to only smoking e-cigarettes, that would probably be good for their health. But again, it’s too early to know for sure whether e-cigarettes are completely safe to smoke.
Whether or not e-cigarettes are safe and will help people stop smoking traditional cigarettes, they are becoming more popular. And some people who have studied them believe that, in ten years, they could become even more popular than traditional cigarettes.
That’s why e-cigarettes appear to be the future of smoking.
Do you smoke cigarettes? If so, are you interested in trying e-cigarettes? And do you know anyone who is already smoking e-cigarettes? If they are the future of smoking, is that a good thing or a bad thing? Share your thoughts by leaving a comment on our website.
