Elon Musk’s Hyperloop Announcement – DailyCast for Thursday

Travelers take planes, trains, and automobiles every day. But one man hopes that sometime in the future, they’ll also be taking something called the Hyperloop. I’ll explain what the Hyperloop is and tell you about the man behind it on today’s DailyCast.

Happy Thursday! You’re listening to the DailyCast from ESLnewscast.com. I’m Cory Renzella, and thank you for listening. I hope you’re having a great day.

If you want to travel between the American cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles, which are both in the west coast state of California, then you have a couple of options.

You can go by car, which takes about five-and-a-half hours. Or, you can go by plane, which takes about an hour and 15 minutes.

But for one man, neither of those options are very good options. That man’s name is Elon Musk, and he’s got an amazing new idea that he just announced to the world on Monday.

Before I explain Musk’s idea, let me tell you a little bit about him. Elon Musk helped create the internet company, PayPal; the car company, Tesla Motors; and the spacecraft company, SpaceX.

Because of his accomplishments, or achievements, with these businesses, Elon Musk is extremely rich. And because he is so creative, people were extremely eager to hear Monday’s announcement.

So, here’s what Elon Musk announced: He wants to create a new transportation system called “Hyperloop”. Musk said that Hyperloop would cost less than US$6 billion; could be completed in about a decade; and could transport, or move, more than seven million people each year.

Those people would be transported between the two American cities that I mentioned, San Francisco and Los Angeles. And Musk says that the entire trip would take less than 30 minutes!

Hyperloop would be solar-powered, which means that it would be powered by the sun. About 28 passengers, or people taking the trip, would travel in each capsule, or container. The capsules would be shot through a tube, and the tube would be connected to the side of a highway that currently runs between the two cities.

To make such a quick trip, Hyperloop would need to travel at a very high speed. Elon Musk said that the capsule would move as fast as 800 miles per hour, or about 1,300 kilometers per hour. And magnets and air inside the tube would make it a very comfortable ride.

All of that sounds great! So, is the Hyperloop all ready to be built?

Well, not yet. Musk does have detailed ideas for how the Hyperloop would work. But so far, he hasn’t actually completed the design, and no tests have been conducted, or done.

Musk chose to make Hyperloop’s designs open-source, meaning they are public, because he wants other people to help create it. And while he is too busy to create it himself, he did say that he would probably build a prototype, which is a model of what it will look like.

Elon Musk is a successful and interesting man, and the Hyperloop is a fascinating, or very interesting, idea. Of course, it will take a lot of time, money, and work to actually create the Hyperloop. But if Elon Musk is successful, then planes, trains, and automobiles won’t be the only types of transportation that travelers will be taking.

Did you see Elon Musk make his Hyperloop announcement on Monday? Are you impressed by his idea? And do you think that it’ll ever become real? Share your thoughts by leaving a comment on our website.

That’s the news for today. ESLnewscast.com is “Your English Window to the World”, and wherever you are in the world, I hope you have a good day. Thanks for listening, and I’ll talk to you again tomorrow. Bye-bye.
